Where to find Bauxite
Australia
World's largest producer of bauxite, with major deposits in the Weipa region (Queensland), Gove (Northern Territory), and Darling Range (Western Australia).
Guinea
Holds the world's largest bauxite reserves, with significant deposits in the Boké and Sangarédi regions.
Brazil
Major deposits in the Paragominas and Trombetas regions of the Amazon basin.
China
Significant deposits, particularly in the provinces of Shanxi, Henan, and Guizhou.
India
Large reserves found in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
Jamaica
Historically a major producer, with deposits formed over limestone.
Collecting tips
- Geological Maps. Consult geological maps of tropical and subtropical regions, looking for areas marked as lateritic soils or residual deposits, especially those derived from aluminum-rich igneous or metamorphic rocks.
- Topography. Bauxite often forms on ancient, stable land surfaces (peneplains) or gently undulating plateaus where weathering has been prolonged and intense.
- Color and Texture. Look for reddish-brown to yellowish, earthy, often pisolitic or oolitic rocks. The characteristic 'pea-like' texture is a strong indicator.
- Associated Minerals. Bauxite is often found in association with kaolinite clays and iron oxides (goethite, hematite).
- Field Tests. While not definitive, bauxite is relatively soft and can often be scratched with a knife. Its specific gravity is higher than typical clays but lower than pure iron ores.
