Bauxite occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

1. Geological Context. Look for bauxite in tropical and subtropical regions, often associated with ancient peneplains or stable land surfaces that have undergone prolonged weathering. It typically overlies igneous or metamorphic rocks rich in aluminum silicates, or sometimes limestones.
2. Visual Identification. Identify its characteristic earthy texture, often with distinct pisolitic or oolitic structures. The color can be a clue, ranging from white to deep red, but is not definitive. A relatively low specific gravity for a rock of its appearance can also be indicative.
3. Field Tests. While not definitive, a simple field test involves crushing a small piece and observing its earthy feel. Chemical tests for aluminum content are required for positive identification and economic evaluation.
4. Associated Minerals. Bauxite is often found with iron oxides (goethite, hematite), kaolinite, and sometimes titanium minerals. The presence of these minerals can help confirm the lateritic environment.
