Other localities
While South Africa is the main source, similar druzy quartz formations can be found in other quartz-rich regions globally, though they may not always be marketed specifically as 'Spirit Quartz' unless they exhibit the characteristic growth habit.
Collecting tips
- Look for distinctive growth habit. The key identifying feature is the larger central crystal covered by a multitude of smaller, outward-pointing crystals. This 'crystal-on-crystal' growth is unique.
- Examine color and transparency. Spirit Quartz typically exhibits good color saturation in the primary crystal, with the druzy layer often being slightly lighter or more translucent. Look for even color distribution.
- Check for damage. Due to its delicate nature with many small crystal terminations, Spirit Quartz can be prone to damage. Inspect specimens carefully for broken points or chips.
- Verify origin. Authentic Spirit Quartz primarily comes from South Africa. While similar formations exist, the term 'Spirit Quartz' is strongly associated with the South African material.
