Collecting tips
- Look for distinctive growth habit. The key identifying feature is the larger central crystal covered by a multitude of smaller, outward-pointing crystals. This 'cactus' or 'porcupine' appearance is unique.
- Observe color variations. Note the color of the main crystal (amethyst, citrine, smoky) and the often lighter, contrasting color of the secondary crystals.
- Examine luster. Both the primary and secondary crystals should exhibit a vitreous (glassy) luster.
