Where to find Shaligram
Kali Gandaki River, Nepal
The most renowned source, particularly for those considered sacred in Hinduism. These are typically found in the riverbed and surrounding sedimentary rocks of the Mustang region of Nepal, which exposes Mesozoic marine strata.
Madagascar
Known for beautifully preserved and often iridescent ammonite fossils, though not typically referred to as 'Shaligrams' in the religious context. These are often silicified or calcified.
United Kingdom (e.g., Lyme Regis, Yorkshire)
Rich in Jurassic ammonite fossils, often preserved in pyrite, calcite, or as molds/casts. These are primarily of paleontological interest.
Germany (e.g., Holzmaden)
Famous for exceptionally preserved Jurassic marine fossils, including ammonites, often flattened in shale.
United States (e.g., Montana, South Dakota)
Cretaceous ammonites, including iridescent 'ammolite' (a gem material from the aragonite shell), are found in the Bearpaw Shale formation.
Collecting tips
- Geological Context. Search in sedimentary rock formations of Mesozoic age, particularly marine shales, limestones, and sandstones. Riverbeds that cut through such formations are also prime locations, as erosion exposes and transports fossils.
- Visual Identification. Look for spiral or coiled shapes, often with ribbed or ornamented surfaces. The internal structure, if exposed, will show septa (chamber walls) or a siphuncle. The color is typically dark.
- Hardness Test. If composed of cryptocrystalline quartz (chert/chalcedony), it will be hard enough to scratch glass (Mohs hardness 6.5-7). If primarily calcite, it will be softer (Mohs hardness 3) and can be scratched by a steel knife.
- Acid Test (for calcite replacement). A drop of dilute hydrochloric acid will effervesce on calcite-replaced fossils, but not on silicified ones. Use caution with acids.
- Respect Local Customs. When searching in areas like the Kali Gandaki River, be aware of and respect the local religious significance and regulations regarding collection.
Quick Check
- Color:
- Dark grey, black, brown
- Luster:
- Dull to waxy/vitreous
- Streak:
- White (for quartz/chert), or white to pale grey (for calcite)
