1. Look for Contact Zones. Focus your search on areas where igneous intrusions (especially granitic or granodioritic) have intruded into carbonate rocks (limestone, dolostone). These contact zones are prime locations for skarn formation.
2. Identify Calc-Silicate Minerals. Familiarize yourself with other common skarn minerals like epidote (pistachio green), hedenbergite/diopside (dark green to black pyroxenes), wollastonite (white, fibrous), and vesuvianite. Andradite will often be found in association with these.
3. Check for Characteristic Crystal Forms. Look for the distinctive dodecahedral or trapezohedral crystal shapes of garnet, even if the crystals are not perfectly formed.
