Where is Orpiment found?

Orpiment occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Collecting tips

1. Geological Context. Look for orpiment in areas with active or past hydrothermal activity, hot springs, fumaroles, and epithermal ore deposits. It is often found in association with realgar, which is red.
2. Associated Minerals. Orpiment frequently occurs with realgar (red arsenic sulfide), stibnite (antimony sulfide), cinnabar (mercury sulfide), and native arsenic. The presence of these minerals can indicate a favorable environment for orpiment.
3. Color and Luster. Its distinctive bright yellow to orange-yellow color and pearly to resinous luster are key identifiers. Be aware that prolonged exposure to light can cause it to degrade.
4. Cleavage and Flexibility. The perfect cleavage into flexible sheets is a characteristic physical property. However, due to its toxicity, physical testing should be minimized and done with extreme caution.
5. Safety Precautions. NEVER taste or lick orpiment. Avoid inhaling dust. Always wear gloves when handling and wash hands thoroughly afterward. Store specimens in sealed containers away from light and other minerals to prevent degradation and contamination. Do not keep in living areas.
