Collecting tips
- Associated Minerals. Look for orpiment in environments where realgar, stibnite, cinnabar, gypsum, calcite, or barite are present, as these minerals often occur together.
- Hydrothermal Settings. Focus on areas with evidence of past or present low-temperature hydrothermal activity, such as hot springs, geysers, or epithermal ore deposits.
- Volcanic Fumaroles. In volcanic regions, check around fumaroles where arsenic-rich gases have deposited minerals.
- Safety Precautions. Due to its high toxicity, never taste or lick orpiment. Always wear gloves when handling specimens and wash hands thoroughly afterward. Avoid inhaling dust. Store specimens in sealed containers away from direct sunlight to prevent alteration and release of arsenic compounds. Do not grind or cut orpiment without proper ventilation and protective equipment.
