Collecting tips
- Look for Quartz Veins. In hard rock environments, gold is often associated with milky white quartz veins, especially those showing signs of alteration or sulfide mineralization.
- Pan for Placer Gold. In stream beds, river gravels, and ancient river terraces, use a gold pan to concentrate heavy minerals. Gold's high density will cause it to settle at the bottom of the pan.
- Check for Associated Minerals. Gold often occurs with pyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite. The presence of these sulfides can indicate a gold-bearing environment.
- Examine Rock Fractures and Cracks. Gold can precipitate in small fractures, cracks, and vugs within host rocks, even if the main body of the rock is not visibly mineralized.
- Research Historical Gold Rushes. Areas with historical gold production often still contain undiscovered deposits or residual placer gold.
