Where to find Green Aventurine
India (especially Mysore and Chennai)
India is the primary source of high-quality green aventurine, particularly from deposits in the southern states. These deposits are known for their vibrant green color and strong aventurescence.
Brazil
Brazil is another significant producer, offering a range of green aventurine qualities, often with slightly lighter shades of green.
Russia (Ural Mountains)
Historically, Russia has produced aventurine, including green varieties, though often with a slightly different character than Indian material.
Tanzania
Some deposits of green aventurine have been found in Tanzania.
Austria
Historical sources of aventurine, including green, are known from Austria.
Collecting tips
- Look for Metamorphic Terrains. Focus your search in regions known for regional metamorphism, especially those with quartzite or mica schist formations. Aventurine is not typically found in igneous or purely sedimentary environments.
- Identify Fuchsite-Rich Areas. Since fuchsite causes the green color, areas with known chromium mineralization or green mica occurrences might indicate the presence of green aventurine.
- Observe for Aventurescence. The most distinctive feature is the sparkling effect. Look for rocks that shimmer or glitter when rotated under light. This is key to distinguishing it from other green quartz varieties.
- Check for Translucency. Aventurine is typically translucent, allowing some light to pass through, unlike opaque jaspers.
