Where to find Banded Iron Formation
Hamersley Basin, Western Australia
Home to some of the largest and richest BIF deposits globally, including the Brockman Iron Formation.
Lake Superior Region, USA and Canada
Significant BIF deposits, particularly in the Mesabi Range (Minnesota, USA) and the Michipicoten Greenstone Belt (Ontario, Canada).
Minas Gerais, Brazil
Contains extensive BIF deposits, notably the Itabirite formations.
Krivoy Rog Basin, Ukraine
A major iron ore district with large BIF occurrences.
Transvaal Supergroup, South Africa
Includes important BIF units such as the Kuruman Iron Formation.
Collecting tips
- Look for Banding. The most distinctive feature is the alternating dark and light bands. This banding can be very fine (millimeter-scale) or coarser (centimeter-scale).
- Check for Iron Minerals. The dark bands will often be magnetic (due to magnetite) or have a reddish streak (due to hematite). A magnet can be a useful tool.
- Assess Hardness. The chert layers are very hard (Mohs 7), while the iron minerals can vary. The overall rock will be quite hard and resistant to weathering.
- Geological Context. BIFs are almost exclusively Precambrian in age. Look for them in ancient cratonic shields and areas known for Archean or Paleoproterozoic rocks.
- Associated Rocks. Often found with other metasedimentary rocks, such as slates, phyllites, and quartzites, and sometimes with volcanic rocks in greenstone belts.
