Where to find Basalt with Quartz Veins

Collecting tips
- Look for Fractures. Quartz veins will typically follow pre-existing fractures or fault lines within the basalt. Examine outcrops for linear features or zones of weakness.
- Color Contrast. The white or translucent quartz veins will stand out against the dark background of the basalt, making them relatively easy to spot.
- Hardness Test. Quartz is significantly harder than most minerals in basalt (Mohs 7). A steel knife (Mohs ~5.5) will scratch basalt but not quartz. This can help confirm the presence of quartz.
- Geological Context. Areas with known volcanic activity, hydrothermal systems, or significant tectonic fracturing are more likely to host basalt with quartz veins.
