Where to find Veined Basalt
Columbia River Basalt Group, USA
Extensive flood basalts with numerous occurrences of quartz and calcite veins, particularly in areas affected by later hydrothermal activity.
Deccan Traps, India
Another large igneous province where basaltic flows are often veined with secondary minerals.
Iceland
Active volcanic island with abundant basaltic rocks, where hydrothermal systems frequently lead to veining.
Mid-Ocean Ridges (exposed sections)
Basalts from mid-ocean ridges, when exposed on land (e.g., ophiolites), often show extensive veining due to seafloor hydrothermal circulation.
Collecting tips
- Look for Outcrops. Search for exposed rock faces, road cuts, or stream beds in regions known for basaltic volcanism. Veins are often more visible on weathered surfaces.
- Examine Fractures and Vesicles. Pay close attention to areas where the basalt is fractured or highly vesicular, as these are preferential sites for vein formation.
- Test Vein Minerals. Carry a steel nail or knife to test the hardness (quartz scratches steel, calcite does not). A drop of dilute hydrochloric acid can be used to test for calcite (it will effervesce).
- Observe Color and Luster Contrast. The lighter color and distinct luster of quartz or calcite veins against the dark basalt matrix make them relatively easy to spot.

- Dark gray to black matrix with white to translucent veins.
- Luster:
- Dull to sub-vitreous for basalt, vitreous for quartz, vitreous to pearly for calcite.
- Streak:
- White for both quartz and calcite; basalt typically has a grayish-white streak.
