Persian Gulf
Historically a primary source of natural pearls, particularly around Bahrain, known for its warm, shallow waters conducive to pearl oyster growth.
Australia
Known for large South Sea pearls, primarily from the Pinctada maxima oyster, found off the coasts of Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
French Polynesia
Famous for black Tahitian pearls, produced by the Pinctada margaritifera (black-lipped oyster) in the lagoons of its islands.
Japan
A pioneer in cultured pearl production, particularly Akoya pearls from the Pinctada fucata martensii oyster, in bays like Ago Bay.
China
A major producer of freshwater cultured pearls, primarily from Hyriopsis cumingii mussels, in lakes and rivers.

Collecting tips
- Natural vs. Cultured Pearls. Natural pearls are extremely rare and found by chance. Cultured pearls are farmed by introducing an irritant (bead or tissue graft) into a mollusk. Most pearls on the market today are cultured.
- Mollusk Habitats. Pearls are found in specific marine (oysters) and freshwater (mussels) mollusk species. Searching for pearls involves harvesting these mollusks, which is typically done by commercial pearl farms or divers in historical natural pearl beds.
- Ethical Sourcing. When acquiring pearls, consider their origin and ensure they are ethically sourced, especially for natural pearls, to avoid contributing to unsustainable practices.
