Pearl occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Where to find Pearl

Persian Gulf

Historically a primary source of natural pearls, particularly off the coasts of Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.

Australia

Known for large South Sea pearls, particularly from the Pinctada maxima oyster, off the northern and western coasts.

French Polynesia

Famous for black Tahitian pearls, produced by the Pinctada margaritifera oyster in the lagoons of its islands.

Japan

Pioneered cultured pearl production (Akoya pearls from Pinctada fucata martensii) and remains a significant producer.

China

A major producer of freshwater cultured pearls (from Hyriopsis cumingii and other mussels) and increasingly saltwater pearls.

Philippines

Produces South Sea pearls, similar to Australia, from Pinctada maxima.

Indonesia

Another significant producer of South Sea pearls.

Collecting tips

  1. Natural Pearl Hunting. Natural pearl hunting is extremely rare and often illegal or highly regulated due to conservation efforts. It involves diving for wild mollusks, a dangerous and low-yield endeavor. Most commercial pearls are cultured.
  2. Cultured Pearl Sourcing. For collectors interested in pearls, sourcing from reputable pearl farms or dealers is the standard. Understanding the different types of cultured pearls (Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian, Freshwater) and their characteristics is key.
  3. Identification of Natural vs. Cultured. Distinguishing natural from cultured pearls often requires gemological examination (e.g., X-ray radiography) to observe the internal structure and the presence or absence of a bead nucleus.
