Collecting tips
- Geological Maps. Consult geological maps of sedimentary basins, particularly those indicating Carboniferous, Permian, or Cretaceous strata, as these are common ages for significant bituminous coal deposits.
- Outcrops and Road Cuts. Look for dark, layered rock exposures in road cuts, stream banks, and mine dumps in coal-producing regions. Coal seams are often interbedded with shales and sandstones.
- Mine Tailings. Abandoned coal mines or active mining operations often have waste piles (tailings) where smaller pieces of coal can be found. Always exercise caution and obtain permission before entering private property or active mining sites.
- Associated Fossils. Bituminous coal often contains plant fossils (e.g., ferns, tree bark impressions, Stigmaria roots) which can help confirm its organic origin and differentiate it from other black rocks.
