Collecting tips
- Observe Paved Surfaces. Look for dark, granular paved surfaces on roads, driveways, and parking lots. The presence of visible aggregate particles embedded in a black matrix is characteristic.
- Check Construction Sites. Active road construction or repair sites will often have fresh asphalt being laid or stockpiles of asphalt mix.
- Note the Odor. Freshly laid asphalt has a distinct, pungent, petroleum-like odor, especially when hot.
