- Look for Hydrothermal Veins. Fluorite and quartz commonly form in hydrothermal veins cutting through various rock types. Look for areas with evidence of past fluid flow and mineralization.
- Examine Mine Dumps. Old mine dumps from lead-zinc, tin, or other metallic ore operations are excellent places to find fluorite and quartz, as they are common gangue minerals.
- Check Pegmatites. Some pegmatite formations can host fluorite, often alongside large quartz crystals.
- Observe Color and Crystal Habits. Identify the characteristic colors of fluorite (often purple, green, blue) and its cubic/octahedral crystal forms, contrasting with the typically colorless/white quartz and its hexagonal prisms.
- Test for Cleavage. If a piece can be carefully broken, fluorite's perfect octahedral cleavage is a key diagnostic feature, distinguishing it from quartz's conchoidal fracture.
