Where to find Carnelian
India (Maharashtra, Gujarat)
Historically significant source, particularly for high-quality, deep red carnelian. Deposits are often found in alluvial gravels derived from Deccan Traps basalts.
Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul)
Major producer of various chalcedony varieties, including carnelian, often found in geodes and amygdules within basaltic flows.
Uruguay
Known for similar deposits to Brazil, yielding good quality carnelian.
Madagascar
Produces carnelian, often found in alluvial deposits.
United States (Oregon, Washington, California)
Various localities yield carnelian, often associated with volcanic activity.
Germany (Idar-Oberstein region)
Historically a major cutting and polishing center for carnelian, sourcing material from local and international deposits.
Collecting tips
- Look in Volcanic Terrains. Carnelian is frequently found in areas with past volcanic activity, particularly in basalt flows where it fills vesicles (gas bubbles).
- Check Alluvial Deposits. Riverbeds, gravel pits, and beach deposits are good places to search, as carnelian is durable and can be transported and concentrated by water.
- Examine Rock Cavities. Look for nodules or fillings within cavities of host rocks, especially weathered volcanic rocks.
- Observe Color and Translucency. Carnelian's distinctive reddish-orange color and translucency are key identifiers. Hold specimens up to light to check for translucency.
- Test Hardness. With a Mohs hardness of 6.5-7, carnelian will scratch glass and steel, which can help differentiate it from softer look-alikes.
