Where to find Flower Agate
Madagascar
The primary and most significant source of high-quality Flower Agate. Deposits are found in various regions, often associated with volcanic activity.
Other Localities
While Madagascar is the main source, similar chalcedony with floral-like inclusions may be found in other agate-producing regions globally, though often not marketed specifically as 'Flower Agate' unless the inclusions are particularly distinct.
Collecting tips
- Geological Context. Look for areas with past or present volcanic activity, particularly where hydrothermal alteration has occurred. Agates often form in amygdaloidal cavities within basalt flows or in veins within other igneous or metamorphic rocks.
- Associated Minerals. Flower Agate may be found alongside other forms of chalcedony, quartz, and sometimes zeolites or calcite, which can indicate a silica-rich depositional environment.
- Field Identification. Examine weathered rock outcrops for signs of agate nodules or veins. Freshly broken surfaces or polished specimens will best reveal the characteristic 'flower' patterns. The material is hard (Mohs 6.5-7) and will scratch glass.
