Where to find Fire Agate
Mexico
The primary source of high-quality Fire Agate, particularly in the states of Jalisco, Nayarit, and Chihuahua. Famous localities include the Calvillo mines in Aguascalientes and the San Luis Potosí region.
United States
Found in the southwestern states, notably Arizona (e.g., Mule Creek, Black Hills, Slaughter Mountain) and California (e.g., Hauser Geode Beds). These occurrences are also associated with Tertiary volcanic activity.
Brazil
Some occurrences have been reported, though generally not of the same quality or quantity as Mexican or US deposits.
Collecting tips
- Look for Volcanic Environments. Fire Agate is exclusively found in areas with past volcanic activity, particularly in rhyolite and basalt flows. Search for geodes or vugs within these rock types.
- Identify Botryoidal Formations. Unpolished Fire Agate often exhibits a characteristic botryoidal (grape-like) or mammillary growth habit. Look for these rounded, bubbly textures.
- Examine for Iridescence. Even in rough form, some 'fire' might be visible. Rotate the specimen under a light source to check for flashes of color. Polishing is usually required to fully reveal the iridescence.
- Check for Associated Minerals. Fire Agate can be found alongside other chalcedony varieties, quartz crystals, and sometimes calcite or other secondary minerals within volcanic cavities.
