Where to find Chrysoprase
Marlborough, Queensland, Australia
One of the most significant and historically important sources, known for producing high-quality, vibrant apple-green chrysoprase.
Silesia, Poland
Historically a major source, particularly from the Szklary deposit, known for its good quality material.
California, USA
Deposits found in areas with serpentinite bodies, such as Tulare County.
Brazil
Various occurrences, often associated with lateritic nickel deposits.
Russia (Urals)
Known for some occurrences in nickel-rich areas.
Tanzania
Newer sources have emerged, producing good quality material.
Collecting tips
- Geological Context. Focus on areas with known ultramafic rock formations (serpentinites, peridotites) that have undergone significant weathering and lateritization. Look for nickel-rich environments.
- Associated Minerals. Chrysoprase often occurs with magnesite, opal, and other secondary minerals in veins and fracture fillings. The presence of these minerals can be an indicator.
- Color and Luster. Look for the characteristic apple-green to deep green color. Freshly broken surfaces will have a waxy to dull luster, while polished surfaces are vitreous.
- Hardness Test. Chrysoprase has a Mohs hardness of 6.5-7, meaning it can scratch glass and steel. This helps differentiate it from softer green minerals.
- Translucency. Good quality chrysoprase is typically translucent, allowing some light to pass through, especially on thinner edges.
