- Look for Nodule Shapes. Geodes often appear as rounded or irregular nodules in the host rock. They may be heavier than expected for their size due to the mineral infilling.
- Check Geological Maps. Research areas known for geode occurrences, particularly regions with volcanic activity or specific sedimentary rock formations (e.g., Mississippian limestones).
- Examine Outcrops and Stream Beds. Geodes can weather out of their host rock and accumulate in stream beds, gravel pits, or exposed rock outcrops. Look for rounded, bumpy rocks that seem out of place.
- Crack Them Open Carefully. Geodes are typically identified by their hollow interior. They can be carefully cracked open with a rock hammer and chisel, or by using a specialized geode cracker or saw.
- Safety Precautions. When cracking geodes, wear appropriate eye protection (safety glasses) and gloves to prevent injury from flying rock fragments. Be aware of sharp edges.
