India (Deccan Traps)
A primary source, particularly from the Deccan Traps region, known for high-quality green moss agate.

Montana is famous for its 'Montana Moss Agate,' often found in alluvial gravels of the Yellowstone River. Other states also produce various forms.

Collecting tips
- Look in Volcanic Terrains. Moss Agate is frequently found in areas with past volcanic activity, particularly in basalt flows where gas bubbles (amygdules) have been filled with silica.
- Check Alluvial Deposits. Due to its hardness and resistance to weathering, moss agate often survives erosion and can be found in riverbeds, gravels, and stream banks downstream from its primary source.
- Examine Rock Cavities. When prospecting in volcanic rocks, look for geodes or vugs (cavities) that may contain agate formations. Moss agate often forms as linings or fillings within these spaces.
- Look for Translucency. Hold potential specimens up to light. Moss agate will exhibit translucency, allowing the internal moss-like patterns to be visible.
- Distinguish from Organic Matter. While the inclusions resemble moss, they are mineral. True organic matter would typically be much softer and decompose over geological time.
