Where to find Carnelian Agate
India (Maharashtra and Gujarat)
Historically significant source, particularly for high-quality, deep red carnelian. Found in Deccan Trap basalts.
Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul)
Major producer, often found in geodes within basaltic flows.
Uruguay
Known for good quality carnelian, often associated with agate deposits.
Madagascar
Produces carnelian of various shades, often from alluvial deposits.
United States (Oregon, Washington, California)
Found in volcanic regions, often as nodules or vein fillings.
Germany (Idar-Oberstein region)
Historically a major cutting and polishing center, sourcing raw material globally, but also with local deposits.
Collecting tips
- Look in Volcanic Terrains. Focus on areas with ancient or recent volcanic activity, particularly where basaltic rocks are present. Look for geodes, vugs, and fissures.
- Check Alluvial Deposits. Riverbeds, gravel pits, and beach deposits downstream from volcanic areas can yield water-worn carnelian pebbles, which are often naturally tumbled and polished.
- Examine Rock Cavities. Break open weathered volcanic rocks or sedimentary concretions to look for silica-filled cavities. Carnelian often forms as a lining or complete filling.
- Distinguish from Jasper. Carnelian is typically translucent to semi-translucent, while red jasper is opaque. Carnelian's color is often more uniform or subtly banded, whereas jasper can be mottled or patterned.
- Safety Precautions. When collecting in the field, always wear appropriate safety gear, including eye protection and gloves. Be aware of your surroundings and potential hazards. When cutting or polishing, use proper ventilation and respiratory protection to avoid inhaling fine silica dust, which can cause silicosis.
