India

Collecting tips
- Look in Volcanic Regions. Search for carnelian agate in areas with ancient or recent volcanic activity, particularly in basalt flows where gas bubbles (vesicles) have been filled with silica.
- Check Alluvial Deposits. Riverbeds, gravel pits, and beach deposits can yield water-worn carnelian agate pebbles, as it is a durable mineral that resists weathering.
- Identify by Color and Translucency. Look for translucent to semi-translucent stones with a distinct reddish-orange to brownish-red color. Hold specimens up to light to check for translucency and internal patterns.
- Test Hardness. Carnelian Agate is relatively hard (7 on Mohs scale). It should scratch glass and not be easily scratched by a steel knife.
- Examine for Agate Banding. For 'Carnelian Agate' specifically, look for subtle or distinct concentric banding patterns, which differentiate it from uniformly colored carnelian.
