Collecting tips

1. Geological Context. Focus your search in areas known for ultramafic rock bodies (serpentinites, dunites, peridotites) that have undergone significant weathering and lateritization. Look for nickel-rich zones.
2. Associated Minerals. Chrysoprase often occurs with other secondary minerals like magnesite, garnierite (nickel-rich serpentine), and iron oxides (goethite, limonite) within the weathered matrix.
3. Color and Luster. Look for the distinctive apple-green to deep green color of chrysoprase contrasting with the duller, often earthy matrix. The waxy luster of chrysoprase can be a good indicator.
4. Fracture Zones. Chrysoprase typically forms in veins and fracture fillings within the host rock, so examine cracks and fissures in weathered ultramafic outcrops.
5. Hardness Test. Chrysoprase (chalcedony) has a Mohs hardness of 6.5-7, which can help distinguish it from softer associated minerals in the matrix. A steel knife (hardness ~5.5) will not scratch chrysoprase.
