Brazil
Known for large deposits of agate and other chalcedony varieties, particularly in Rio Grande do Sul.
Uruguay
Famous for its high-quality agate geodes and nodules.
India
A historical source of carnelian and other chalcedony types, especially in the Deccan Traps region.
United States
Various states, including Oregon (thunder eggs), Washington, California, Arizona, and Texas, have significant chalcedony occurrences, including petrified wood (often chalcedony-replaced).
Madagascar
Produces a wide range of chalcedony, including agate and jasper.
Germany
Idar-Oberstein region has a long history of agate cutting and polishing, sourced from local and imported material.
Collecting tips
- Look in Volcanic Terrains. Search for chalcedony in areas with past volcanic activity, particularly in basalt flows where it can fill amygdales (gas bubbles) or fractures.
- Check Sedimentary Rocks. Examine limestone, shale, and sandstone formations for nodules, concretions, or veins of chalcedony, often found as chert or flint.
- Riverbeds and Gravel Pits. Chalcedony is durable and often survives weathering, so it can be found as pebbles and cobbles in riverbeds, gravel deposits, and alluvial fans.
- Identify Botryoidal or Nodule Shapes. Chalcedony frequently forms in rounded, grape-like (botryoidal) or kidney-shaped (reniform) masses, or as irregular nodules.
- Test for Hardness. Chalcedony has a Mohs hardness of 6.5-7, meaning it will scratch glass and steel. This helps distinguish it from softer minerals.
- Observe Luster and Translucency. Its characteristic waxy to dull luster and translucent quality are good indicators. Hold thin pieces up to light to check for translucency.
