Collecting tips
- Look for White, Soft Rocks. Chalk is distinctively white or off-white and very soft. It can be easily scratched with a fingernail and will leave a powdery residue on your hands.
- Test for Effervescence. As it is composed of calcium carbonate, chalk will vigorously effervesce (fizz) when a drop of dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) is applied to its surface. This is a key diagnostic test for limestone and chalk.
- Examine for Fossils and Flint. Chalk often contains marine macrofossils (e.g., belemnites, sea urchins) and is frequently interbedded with or contains nodules of black or grey flint, which are secondary silica concretions.
- Consider Geological Context. Chalk deposits are typically found in regions that were once submerged under shallow, clear seas during the Late Cretaceous period. Look for geological maps indicating Cretaceous marine sedimentary formations.
