Brecciated Chert occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Where to find Brecciated Chert

Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas, USA

Known for novaculite (a type of chert) and associated breccias formed by tectonic deformation.

Appalachian Mountains, Eastern USA

Various chert formations, including brecciated varieties, are found in folded and faulted sedimentary sequences.

Midwestern USA (e.g., Missouri, Illinois)

Chert breccias are common in areas with extensive Mississippian and Ordovician carbonate sequences, often associated with karstic collapse features or faulting.

Western Australia

Some banded iron formations (BIFs) contain chert breccias, particularly in areas affected by structural deformation.

Collecting tips

  1. Look for Outcrops. Search in areas with known chert deposits, especially near fault zones, ancient collapse structures, or highly deformed sedimentary sequences.
  2. Examine Road Cuts and Quarries. These artificial exposures often reveal fresh surfaces and internal structures of rock units, making brecciated textures more apparent.
  3. Check Stream Beds and Gravel Pits. Resistant chert fragments, including brecciated varieties, can accumulate in alluvial deposits.
  4. Identify Angular Fragments. The key diagnostic feature is the presence of angular chert fragments cemented together. Distinguish from conglomerates which have rounded clasts.
  5. Test Hardness. Chert is very hard (Mohs 7), so a scratch test against glass or steel can help confirm its identity.

Quick Check

Color:
Variable (white, gray, black, brown, red, green, yellow) with distinct angular fragments and matrix.
Luster:
Dull to waxy or vitreous.
Streak:
White.
