Where to find Iron-rich Chert
Lake Superior Region, USA/Canada
Extensive deposits of Banded Iron Formations (BIFs) containing significant iron-rich chert, particularly in Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ontario. These are some of the world's largest iron ore deposits.
Hamersley Basin, Western Australia
Home to vast Precambrian BIFs, which are major sources of iron ore and contain abundant iron-rich chert.
Transvaal Supergroup, South Africa
Contains significant BIFs with iron-rich chert, representing some of the oldest and most extensive iron formations globally.
Appalachian Mountains, USA
Various chert formations, including iron-stained varieties, are found in Paleozoic sedimentary sequences.
Ozark Plateau, USA
Chert nodules and beds, often iron-stained, are common in Mississippian limestones.
Collecting tips
- Look for Sedimentary Environments. Focus on areas with ancient marine sedimentary rocks, especially those known for chert or iron formations. Riverbeds and gravel pits can also yield weathered chert fragments.
- Observe Color and Fracture. Identify the characteristic red, brown, or yellow hues indicative of iron. Look for the distinctive conchoidal fracture, which produces sharp, curved edges.
- Test Hardness. Chert is hard (Mohs 7) and will scratch glass and steel. This helps distinguish it from softer, iron-stained sedimentary rocks.
- Check for Banding. In BIFs, look for alternating layers of dark, iron-rich material and lighter chert bands.

- Color:
- Red, brown, yellow, orange, or black, often mottled or banded.
- Luster:
- Dull to waxy or vitreous.
- Streak:
- White (for pure chert) to reddish-brown (if significant hematite is present) or yellowish-brown (if goethite/limonite is present). The streak of the iron minerals will dominate if they are abundant.
