Collecting tips
- Look for Green Coloration. The most immediate indicator is the characteristic green color, which can range from pale to dark green.
- Check for Schistosity. Observe if the rock has a distinct layering or foliation, where platy minerals are aligned. It should split relatively easily along these planes.
- Feel the Texture. Rub a finger across the surface; chlorite-rich rocks can feel slightly soapy or slippery due to the platy nature of chlorite.
- Examine Mineral Grains. With a hand lens, try to identify small, platy, green mineral grains (chlorite) that are oriented parallel to each other.
- Consider Geological Context. Chlorite schist is typically found in metamorphic terrains, often associated with other low-grade metamorphic rocks like phyllite, slate, or greenschist.
