Collecting tips
- Geological Context. Look for areas with known occurrences of chromium-rich metamorphic rocks (e.g., serpentinites, talc schists, metacherts) or hydrothermal quartz veins cutting such lithologies. Fuchsite is a good indicator mineral for chromium enrichment in metamorphic environments.
- Color and Luster. The distinctive green color and often shimmering (aventurescent) luster are key visual identifiers. Look for green flakes within a quartz matrix.
- Hardness Test. The quartz component will be hard (Mohs 7), while the fuchsite flakes will be softer (Mohs 2.5-3). This difference can sometimes be felt or observed with a scratch test on individual flakes, though the overall aggregate will feel hard due to the dominant quartz.
- Associated Minerals. May be found with other metamorphic minerals such as talc, chlorite, tremolite, and other micas, especially in greenschist facies rocks.
