Collecting tips
- Look for Green Schists and Quartzites. Fuchsite is most commonly found in metamorphic rocks, especially those with a distinct green color and a flaky texture. Target areas known for greenschist facies metamorphism.
- Associated Minerals. It often co-occurs with quartz, chlorite, talc, and sometimes chromite. The presence of these minerals can be an indicator.
- Ultramafic Protoliths. Areas with metamorphosed ultramafic rocks (serpentinites, peridotites) are prime locations, as these are the primary source of chromium.
- Examine Cleavage. The perfect basal cleavage is a key diagnostic feature. Look for thin, flexible flakes that can be peeled off.
- Color Consistency. The green color should be relatively consistent throughout the flakes, distinguishing it from surface staining or other green minerals.
