Florida, USA
Extensive deposits, particularly along the Atlantic coast, notably in St. Augustine where it was used for construction (e.g., Castillo de San Marcos).
North Carolina, USA
Found in coastal plain sediments, often associated with ancient shorelines.
South Carolina, USA
Similar to North Carolina, present in coastal plain formations.
Portugal
Significant Mesozoic coquina deposits are known, particularly in the Algarve region.
Brazil
Coastal regions, especially in the northeast, contain coquina deposits.
Australia
Found in various coastal and shallow marine sedimentary sequences.
Collecting tips
- Coastal Environments. Look for coquina in modern or ancient coastal environments, particularly where there are abundant shell accumulations, such as beaches, dunes, and shallow marine platforms.
- Quarries and Road Cuts. Active or abandoned quarries in coastal plain regions are excellent places to find coquina, as are road cuts that expose sedimentary layers.
- Erosion Zones. Coastal erosion can expose coquina layers along cliffs or shorelines. Always be mindful of safety when exploring such areas.
- Associated Fossils. Coquina is inherently fossiliferous. Look for well-preserved or fragmented shells within the rock matrix, which can help confirm its identity.
