Collecting tips
- Research Geological Maps. Consult geological maps and reports for areas known to have ancient marine sedimentary formations, especially those indicating past reef environments or silicified fossil occurrences.
- Look in Riverbeds and Gravel Pits. Fossilized coral, being durable, can often be found as 'float' in riverbeds, gravel pits, and eroded areas where it has been weathered out of its original matrix.
- Examine Limestone Outcrops. In areas with exposed ancient limestone formations, carefully inspect for silicified nodules or sections that might contain fossilized coral structures.
- Check for Distinctive Patterns. Look for the characteristic radial or honeycomb-like patterns that indicate the preserved structure of coral polyps. These patterns are often visible on weathered surfaces.
- Test Hardness. Fossilized coral, being silicified, will be harder than typical limestone. It should scratch glass (Mohs hardness of 7 for chalcedony).
