Where to find Gravel
Riverbeds and Alluvial Fans
Natural gravel deposits are abundant in active and ancient river channels, floodplains, and alluvial fans where water current has sorted and deposited rock fragments.
Glacial Deposits
Moraines, eskers, kames, and outwash plains left by retreating glaciers are significant sources of natural gravel, often poorly sorted.
Quarries and Mines
Crushed aggregate is produced globally from quarries that extract suitable bedrock (e.g., limestone, granite, basalt, dolomite, sandstone, quartzite). These operations are typically located near urban centers or transportation routes to minimize hauling costs.
Coastal Areas
Beaches and coastal plains can contain significant gravel deposits, often well-rounded by wave action.
Collecting tips
- Observe Particle Shape. Natural gravel tends to be rounded or sub-rounded due to abrasion during transport. Crushed aggregate will have sharp, angular edges and fractured surfaces.
- Examine Composition. Look at the variety of rock types present. Natural gravel often shows a mix of local bedrock types. Crushed aggregate will typically be more uniform if sourced from a single quarry, but can be mixed if recycled or blended.
- Consider the Source. If you are looking for natural gravel, search in areas with active or ancient water flow (rivers, streams) or glacial activity. For crushed aggregate, consider areas near construction sites or quarries.
- Size Classification. Gravel is defined by particle size (2 mm to 64 mm). Use a ruler or sieve to confirm the size range of the material.
