Where to find Shiva Lingam
Narmada River, Madhya Pradesh, India
The sole natural source of Shiva Lingams. These stones are collected from the riverbed, particularly during the dry season when water levels are lower.
Collecting tips
- Authenticity Verification. Due to their cultural significance and demand, artificial or altered stones are sometimes sold as Shiva Lingams. Authentic Shiva Lingams are naturally formed and collected from the Narmada River. Look for natural variations in color and pattern, and avoid perfectly uniform or unnaturally vibrant specimens.
- Ethical Sourcing. Ensure that any Shiva Lingam purchased has been ethically sourced and collected in a manner that respects local traditions and environmental regulations.
- Physical Characteristics. Examine the stone for its characteristic ovoid shape, smooth texture, and the distinctive reddish-brown iron oxide markings against a lighter background. The hardness should be consistent with quartz (scratch glass).
