Collecting tips
- Look for Gossans. Limonite is a key component of gossans, which are oxidized, weathered caps over sulfide ore bodies. The presence of a gossan can indicate underlying copper (and thus malachite) or other metal deposits.
- Identify Copper Stains. Malachite often forms as green stains or coatings on other rocks in copper-rich areas. Look for these distinctive green hues.
- Check for Carbonate Rocks. Malachite frequently forms in association with carbonate host rocks (limestone, dolomite) where copper-bearing solutions react with the carbonates.
- Examine Weathered Zones. Both minerals are secondary and form in the weathered, oxidized zones of mineral deposits, typically near the surface.
- Test for Effervescence (Malachite). Malachite will effervesce (fizz) when a drop of dilute hydrochloric acid is applied, due to its carbonate content. Limonite will not.
