Collecting tips
- Look for Copper Deposits. Focus your search on areas known for copper mineralization, particularly the weathered caps (gossans) of sulfide deposits.
- Identify Oxidized Zones. Malachite and limonite are secondary minerals, so they will be found in the upper, oxidized portions of ore bodies, often near the surface.
- Observe Color and Habit. The distinctive bright green of malachite and the earthy browns/yellows of limonite are key visual indicators. Look for botryoidal or banded textures.
- Acid Test (Caution Advised). Malachite will effervesce (fizz) vigorously with dilute hydrochloric acid, releasing carbon dioxide. Limonite will not react. Always use appropriate safety gear and dilute acid for this test.
