Where to find Malachite
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
World's leading producer of high-quality malachite, particularly from the Katanga Copperbelt, known for large, botryoidal specimens.
Russia
Historically significant deposits in the Ural Mountains, famous for large blocks used in architectural decoration (e.g., Malachite Room in the Hermitage Museum).
Australia
Various copper mines, including those in Queensland and South Australia, produce malachite.
United States
Found in copper mining districts of Arizona (e.g., Bisbee, Morenci), New Mexico, and Utah.

Collecting tips
- Look for Copper Deposits. Malachite is a secondary copper mineral, so search in areas known for primary copper mineralization, especially in the oxidized cap of these deposits.
- Identify Associated Minerals. Malachite often occurs with other secondary copper minerals like azurite, chrysocolla, native copper, cuprite, and iron oxides (goethite, limonite).
- Check for Green Stains. Look for green staining on rocks, which can indicate the presence of copper minerals, including malachite.
- Test with Acid (Caution!). Malachite effervesces (fizzes) readily in dilute hydrochloric acid, releasing carbon dioxide. This is a definitive test but should be done with caution due to the acid and potential for dust inhalation.
- Observe Habit and Luster. Its characteristic botryoidal or mammillary habit and silky luster (in fibrous varieties) are good indicators.
