Cubic Zirconia is produced in specialized laboratories and industrial facilities worldwide, particularly in countries with advanced materials science and jewelry manufacturing capabilities, such as Russia, China, and Thailand.
Collecting tips
- Distinguishing from Diamond. Cubic Zirconia is generally heavier than diamond of the same size (higher specific gravity), has a lower thermal conductivity (diamond testers rely on this), often exhibits more 'fire' (dispersion) than diamond, and typically shows a 'rainbow effect' when viewed under direct light due to its high dispersion. It also has a lower hardness than diamond (8-8.5 vs. 10 on Mohs scale).
- Identifying as Synthetic. Always remember that Cubic Zirconia is a synthetic material. If a specimen is presented as a 'natural mineral' with properties matching CZ, it is a misrepresentation.
