Collecting tips
- Look for distinctive patterns. The most defining characteristic is the white/cream base with black spots. This pattern is quite unique among common rocks and minerals.
- Check for hardness. As a variety of quartz, it will be relatively hard (Mohs 6.5-7). It will scratch glass and steel.
- Examine luster. Unpolished specimens will have a dull to earthy luster, while polished pieces will show a waxy to vitreous sheen.
- Consider geological context. While not always found in situ by collectors, understanding that Jaspers often form in silica-rich environments, sometimes associated with volcanic or hydrothermal activity, can be helpful for general prospecting.
