Where to find Dalmatian Jasper
Chihuahua, Mexico
The primary and most well-known source of high-quality Dalmatian Jasper. Deposits are found in areas associated with volcanic activity and subsequent hydrothermal alteration.
Other localities
Similar spotted rocks, sometimes marketed as Dalmatian Jasper, have been reported from various locations globally, but the Mexican material is considered the benchmark.
Collecting tips
- Look for altered igneous rocks. Focus on areas with evidence of past volcanic or intrusive igneous activity, particularly where hydrothermal alteration has occurred. Look for fine-grained, light-colored rocks with dark mineral inclusions.
- Examine rock outcrops. Dalmatian Jasper often forms in massive bodies or veins. Look for distinctive spotted patterns on weathered or freshly broken surfaces.
- Check for hardness. As it is primarily composed of quartz and feldspar, it will be relatively hard (Mohs 6-7). This can help differentiate it from softer, similar-looking rocks.
