Where to find Dalmation Jasper
Chihuahua, Mexico
The primary and most well-known source of Dalmation Jasper, particularly from the area around the Sierra Madre Occidental.
Brazil
Some occurrences have been reported, though less prominent than Mexican sources.
Other localities
Similar rocks with black and white patterns may be found in various locations globally where appropriate geological conditions (felsic intrusions with specific hydrothermal alteration) exist, but they may not always be marketed as 'Dalmation Jasper'.
Collecting tips
- Geological Context. Look for areas with known felsic intrusive igneous rocks, particularly those showing signs of hydrothermal alteration or late-stage magmatic differentiation.
- Outcrop Appearance. Identify outcrops with a light-colored, fine-grained matrix containing distinct black, often acicular or blocky, mineral inclusions.
- Hardness Test. Perform a scratch test; the material should be relatively hard (Mohs 6-7) due to its quartz and feldspar content.
- Associated Minerals. Look for associated minerals typical of felsic igneous rocks and hydrothermal alteration, such as other feldspars, quartz, micas, and amphiboles.
