1. Look for Reddish-Brown Staining. Weathered iron-rich rocks often impart a distinctive reddish-brown or yellowish-brown color to the surrounding soil and outcrops. Look for these color anomalies.
2. Examine Outcrop Textures. Observe for porous, nodular, or concretionary textures. The rock may feel earthy or gritty. Sometimes, relict structures of the original rock (e.g., bedding, foliation) might be preserved.
3. Check for Heavy Weight. Despite porosity, iron-rich rocks can be surprisingly dense due to the high specific gravity of iron oxides. Lift samples to gauge their weight.
4. Perform a Streak Test. Rub a fresh surface of the rock against an unglazed porcelain streak plate. A reddish-brown, yellowish-brown, or dark red streak is indicative of iron oxides/hydroxides.
5. Consider the Geological Context. These rocks are common in areas with ancient iron-rich sedimentary or igneous rocks, or in regions with extensive sulfide mineralization (where gossans form). Tropical and subtropical climates favor their formation.
