Where to find Iron-stained rock
Worldwide
Iron-stained rocks are ubiquitous and can be found in virtually any geological setting where iron-bearing rocks are exposed to oxidizing conditions, particularly in humid and temperate climates. Notable occurrences include weathered outcrops, riverbeds, desert pavements, and areas with significant hydrothermal alteration.
Gossans
The oxidized, iron-rich cap overlying sulfide ore deposits. These are often intensely iron-stained and can indicate economic mineralization below.
Sedimentary Basins
Common in clastic sedimentary rocks (sandstones, conglomerates) where iron-rich fluids have permeated and precipitated iron oxides as cement or coatings.
Collecting tips
- Look for Color. The most obvious indicator is the characteristic reddish, yellowish, or brownish coloration on rock surfaces, fractures, or within the rock matrix.
- Check for Weathering. Iron staining is a product of weathering. Look for it in areas where rocks have been exposed to the elements for extended periods, such as outcrops, stream beds, and road cuts.
- Consider the Host Rock. While iron staining can occur on almost any rock type, it is particularly common in rocks that originally contained iron-bearing minerals (e.g., mafic igneous rocks, shales, sandstones with iron-rich detritus).
- Streak Test (for the stain itself). If you can scrape off some of the stained material, a streak test can help identify the dominant iron oxide. Hematite gives a reddish-brown streak, while goethite/limonite gives a yellowish-brown streak.
