Collecting tips
- Look for Color. The most obvious indicator is the characteristic reddish-brown, orange, or yellow color, which is often more intense on weathered surfaces.
- Examine Grain Size and Texture. Confirm it's a sandstone by observing sand-sized grains. The gritty feel is typical. Look for evidence of iron cement binding the grains.
- Check for Hardness. While quartz grains are hard (Mohs 7), the overall hardness of the rock can vary significantly depending on the strength and abundance of the iron cement. Some can be quite friable, others very hard.
- Observe Geological Context. Ferruginous sandstones often occur in sequences with other sedimentary rocks, sometimes indicating ancient fluvial or shallow marine environments, or paleosols.
