Where to find Pyrite in matrix
Rio Tinto, Spain
Famous for massive sulfide deposits with abundant pyrite, often in a quartz-rich matrix.
Elba Island, Italy
Known for well-formed pyrite crystals, often in a slate or schist matrix.
Peru
Various localities produce excellent pyrite specimens, frequently in a quartz or sulfide matrix.
Colorado, USA
Many mining districts, such as Leadville and Ouray, have pyrite in various host rocks, including quartz veins and altered igneous rocks.
Germany
The Harz Mountains and other regions are known for pyrite occurrences in sedimentary and metamorphic matrices.
Collecting tips
- Look for metallic luster. Pyrite's distinctive metallic sheen is often the first indicator. Look for brassy-yellow specks or crystals embedded in darker or lighter host rocks.
- Check for crystal forms. Well-formed cubic, octahedral, or pyritohedral crystals are strong indicators of pyrite. Examine the rock surface for these geometric shapes.
- Consider the geological context. Pyrite is common in areas with hydrothermal activity, sedimentary rocks rich in organic matter (like black shales), and some metamorphic terrains. Understanding the local geology can guide your search.
- Perform a streak test. A greenish-black to brownish-black streak on an unglazed porcelain plate is characteristic of pyrite and helps distinguish it from gold (which has a yellow streak).
- Beware of weathering. Pyrite can weather to iron oxides (like goethite or limonite), forming rusty stains on the rock surface. Freshly broken surfaces or protected areas may reveal the unweathered pyrite.
