Mississippi Valley Type (MVT) Deposits
These are major sources of lead and zinc, found in sedimentary rocks, particularly limestones and dolomites. Notable occurrences include the Tri-State district (Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, USA) and the Upper Mississippi Valley district (Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, USA).

Collecting tips
- Look for Associated Minerals. Galena is frequently found with sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, quartz, calcite, and fluorite. Identifying these associated minerals can help pinpoint galena occurrences.
- Check for High Density. Galena is noticeably heavy for its size due to its lead content. This is a key diagnostic property.
- Observe Cleavage. The perfect cubic cleavage is a strong indicator. Freshly broken surfaces will show smooth, flat faces intersecting at 90-degree angles.
- Test Streak. A lead-gray to black streak is characteristic and helps differentiate it from other metallic minerals.
- Safety Precautions. Always handle galena with care. Avoid inhaling dust, and wash hands thoroughly after handling. Do not ingest or allow children to handle it without supervision due to its lead content. Store specimens in a way that prevents dust generation.
